June’s book. “Brown Girl in the Ring” by Nalo Hopkinson. Hopkinson wrote this book in 1998. It was her first novel. It is speculative fiction that weaves in Afro-Caribbean folklore and spirits to tell the story of a future Toronto where the rich and privileged have left to the suburbs and the city has collapsed into disrepair where people are preyed upon for a variety of reasons. Our hero is a young, Black woman. She is deeply nuanced. As Ti-Jeanne becomes the only person who can stop the *truly* evil bad guy she begins to accept and understand her powers, as they are the only way for her to stop him. Hopkinson explores the divide between those with privilege and those without. She delves into the complexities of intergenerational family dynamics between women. She honors the power of ancestors. And she tells the story of a woman finding her way. “I can’t keep giving my will into other people hands no more, ain’t? I have to decide what I want for myself.”
